In March 2021, roughly 1.1 million international overnight visitors entered Mexican territory by land. A year earlier, the number of foreign tourists entering Mexico on foot or by car neared 1.6 million in that same month. Right after the first COVID-19 wave in Mexico, the number of international tourists plunged to 691 thousand in April 2020. Despite the recovery shown in the last four months of 2020, Mexico's tourist arrivals by land remained below pre-pandemic levels in early 2021.
