The completion rate of primary schools worldwide stood at around 90 percent in 2020. The completion rate increased over the past two decades as only about 82 percent of children in lower secondary age finished school in 2000. By comparison, the completion rate of lower secondary school was around 76 percent in 2019.
Primary school completion rate worldwide from 2000 to 2020
Primary completion rate, or gross intake ratio to the last grade of primary education, is the number of new entrants (enrollments minus repeaters) in the last grade of primary education, regardless of age, divided by the population at the entrance age for the last grade of primary education. Data limitations preclude adjusting for students who drop out during the final year of primary education.
