As of April 2021, China was Kenya's main bilateral creditor. The public debt with the Asian country amounted to some 764.6 billion Kenyan shillings (KSh), approximately seven billion U.S. dollars. The amount corresponded to roughly 70 percent of Kenya's total debt with other countries, measured at 1.5 trillion KSh (13.7 billion U.S. dollars) in the same period. Overall, the stock of public debt, including multilateral and commercial creditors, summed up to nearly 3.8 trillion KSh (34.8 billion U.S. dollars).
