Electrical machinery accounted for the largest share of foreign trade in Japan in 2023, with a total trade value of over 34 trillion Japanese yen. Mineral fuels followed as the second most traded commodity, with just under 29 trillion yen. While the country exports a small amount of mineral fuels, imports account for the majority of the trade value due to the energy industry's heavy reliance on imports to cover domestic demand. That year, the total value of foreign trade in Japan exceeded 211 trillion yen.
