In a September 2020 survey among adults in the United States, around 25 percent of adults were currently saving up to purchase a home. There were at that time more men (28 percent) than women (23 percent) wishing to do so. In comparison, the share of men that didn't expect or plan to ever own a home (28 percent) was also bigger than the share of women (27 percent).
Data were weighted to approximate a target sample of adults based on age, race/ethnicity, gender, educational attainment, and region. Results from the full survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage points.
The original survey question was formulated as: "Do you expect to own a home in the future?"
This survey question had 1863 respondents (799 male, 1064 female).
