In 2023, India scored 17 out of a possible 40 on violation of digital user rights. This was consistent with the scores of the past two years. Journalists and activists continued to be intimidated by the Modi-led government for voicing criticism under vague charges of sedition and threatening the unity and integrity of the country. The latest in the slew of these cases was the raid of the offices of news website Newsclick in October 2023 under allegations of receiving foreign funding from China.
