Between 2014 and 2019, the number of companies that benefited from wage subsidies decreased by over 70 percent. In 2019, roughly 37 thousand companies benefited for at least one day from subsidies. Wage subsidies are paid in Italy to workers whose working activity has been suspended or reduced. The subsidies are paid by the Italian entities of social security. However, in 2020, the number of requests increased. As a consequence of the rising number of cases, in March 2020 the Italian government announced that the country was in lockdown and many non-essential activities had to shut down their operations.
