The number of companies listed the Milan Stock Exchange, otherwise known as the Borsa Italiana, grew significantly between 2000 and 2022. Company numbers peaked in 2021, when nearly 500 companies listed. Of those, the vast majority were listed on the Mercato Telematico Azionario (MTA) market, which is comprised of mid and large-sized companies. The remainder were listed on the AIM Italia, which hosts high-growth small and medium enterprises. As of September 2024, there was a total of 426 companies listed on the Milan Stock Exchange.

Mercato Telematico Azionario (MTA): Market segment for mid and large-size companies. Mercato Expandi: Market designed for established small cap companies in traditional sectors; merged with the MTA in June 2009. Alternative Capital Market (MAC): Alternative trading system dedicated to small enterprises; established July 2007 and merged with the AIM Italia in 2012. AIM Italia: Market dedicated to high growth small and medium enterprises; established in 2009.
