In 2022, the dominant technology of mobile subscriptions used in India was LTE, which reached more than 822 million. It was expected to peak in 2024 to around 860 million subscriptions, with 3G being phased out by that time. 5G will account for 57 percent of mobile subscriptions in India at the end of 2028, with an estimation of 699.8 million subscriptions.
5G in India
As of August 2023, there were two telecom providers offering 5G services in India: Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Jio was the first to introduce 5G services, beginning at the end of 2022. These two companies provided coverage to nearly ten thousand cities and towns across the country. It was estimated that by the end of 2023, there would be pan-India 5G coverage. However, the majority of smartphone owners in India did not have 5G-enabled devices. The added expenses associated with upgrading to a new phone and subscribing to a 5G tariff might hinder the adoption of 5G by consumers.
Smartphone market in India
The smartphone market in India has been growing rapidly over the last decade. In 2022, the market size of smartphones reached around 144 million units, almost ten times more than the volume in 2011. As the market grew, so did the competition to lead it. Some of the most popular smartphone brands in the market were from China, including Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Realme. However, Samsung managed to remain in the top spot during the same period.
