Number of central wholesale markets in Japan FY 2013-2022
At the end of fiscal year 2022, the number of central wholesale markets operating in Japan amounted to 65, remaining at the same level as the previous fiscal years.
Central wholesale markets refer to wholesale markets operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in Japan. One of the most successful central markets was the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo, which was the largest wholesale market for fish and seafood in the country prior to its closure and relocation towards the Toyosu Market.
