As of 2020, whereas 66.8 percent of the active population in urban areas of Morocco were employees, 33.2 percent were self-employed. During the investigated period, the urban self-employment rate ranged from 31.6 percent to 33.2 percent, while the share of employees variated from 66.8 percent to 68.3 percent. On the whole, employment in Morocco is higher in urban than rural areas.

Employees are defined as those of working age who are engaged in any activity with the aim of producing goods or providing services for pay or profit. Self-employed workers, on the other hand, refer to those who work on their own account with one or a few partners or in cooperative, and whose job remuneration directly comes from profits that are derived from the goods and services that are produced.
