Ratio of senior high school students with A2 English level Japan AY 2014-2023
In the academic year 2023, around 51 percent of students at public senior high schools in Japan either passed the A2 level test for English based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) or were confirmed by teachers to have attained the equivalent level. The ratio increased by nearly 19 percent compared to the academic year 2014.
The CEFR is used to assess the language proficiency of the learners. It comprises six levels from A1 for beginners up to C2 for those who have mastered a language.
