Prevalence of voter fraud in Nigeria 2019, by area and gender
In Nigeria, people living in rural areas are more likely to experience vote-buying in organized elections. As of 2019, 24 percent of male and 19 percent of female respondents declared that they were offered money or nonâmonetary favors in exchange for their vote in state and national elections. The higher likelihood of vote-buying in rural Nigeria might be related to higher poverty rates in rural areas than urban ones. Therefore, rural voters might be more often targeted in electoral frauds.
