The United States is the biggest producer of emissions from natural gas combustion worldwide, and has been for a number of decades. In 1960, the U.S. emitted 630 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) from gas use and by 2022 emissions had increased to 1,744 MtCO₂. The second largest emitter during this period was Russia, which in 2022 released 811 MtCO₂ from gas use. Global natural gas consumption has been steadily rising and peaked in 2021 at over four trillion cubic meters.
