In 2021, passenger cars were the leading source of road transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union, representing almost 59 percent of the overall greenhouse gas emissions produced by road transportation in the European Union (EU-27). Heavy-duty trucks and buses were ranked second, accounting for around 28 percent of emissions from road transportation.
