Women's soccer in France, a long fight for recognition
In 1932, the men of Olympique Lillois won the French soccer championship. While waiting for more than 40 years so that the French Football Federation organizes the first women's national championship, the players of the Stade de Reims Stadium won their first trophy. For the event, the match was broadcasted on French television. However, there were no more women's soccer broadcasts until the early 2000s, picking up the qualifying match for the 2003 World Cup.Since the early 2000s and the good results that Olympique Lyonnais achieved on the European platfrom, as well as the results achieved by the national French team on an international level, women's soccer has been developing. Thus, in 2019, football was the fifth ranking sport in terms of number of women registered in a single-sport Olympic federation.
The French spectators finally seemed to be catching up with women's sports on television, as the women's world cup was the most expected sports event of the year, in 2019.
