As of June 23, 2020, the number of public lower secondary schools in Japan that closed temporarily due to the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) amounted to 1,745. Close to 100 percent of the surveyed public schools in Japan experienced a temporary closure after April 1. Following the rapid growth of the number of COVID-19 cases, the government declared a countrywide state of emergency on April 16 and requested businesses, schools, and others to shut down. The state was lifted completely on May 25.
