In 2020, the number of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners in Japan increased by 244 scanners (+3.49 percent) since 2017. While the growth is slowing down, with 7,240 scanners, the number of MRI scanners is at its peak in the observed period. Notably, the number of MRI scanners continuously increased over the last years. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses magnetic/electromagnetic fields combined with an induced resonance effect of hydrogen atoms. The result is a visualization of internal organs and body structures. MRI does not use x-rays or ionizing radiation which distinguishes it from CT and PET scans.
