In a survey conducted in 2020, 68 percent of respondents stated that they used social media to find out the nutritional information of their food. Whereas 33 percent of respondents gave nutrition companies as the channels they used to find out nutritional information. Although the majority of respondents said they used social media to find out this vital information, it proved to be the least trusted information source.
Diet trends in APAC
As many Asia Pacific consumers have become increasingly health-conscious, many diet trends have begun to emerge throughout the region. The consumption of functional food and beverages has increased across the region as well as the act of replacing traditional ingredients with healthier alternatives. Vegetarianism and veganism have also been on the rise in the Asia Pacific region throughout recent years. Correspondingly, the plant-based beverage market increased significantly from the onset of 2014.
Differences in diet
However, the health-conscious consumer is not necessarily widespread throughout the whole of the region. This is prevalent in the increasing obesity rates across the region. Additionally, some citizens are undernourished throughout the Asia Pacific region. Not only did South Asia have a significant share of undernourished people in 2019, but the region also had the highest prevalence of child stunting among all Asia Pacific regions.
