Schools in urban areas from Tanzania had more access to improved sources of drinking water than those in rural zones, as of 2018. Around 84 percent of urban schools provided safe water, while the share in rural areas was at 63.8 percent. Overall, around 68 percent of schools in Tanzania had
access to an improved source of water in the same period, while 14.2 percent did not have any access to drinking water at all.

From the total, 2,240 schools were located in Tanzania Mainland and 156 in Zanzibar.
According to the source, improved water sources are those which, by nature of their design and construction, have the potential to deliver safe water by preventing water contamination. Improved sources include piped water, boreholes or tube wells, protected dug wells, protected springs, and rainwater.
