The industrial and commercial sectors in Central America were expected to be the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, in terms of energy consumption. As a result of lockdown measures implemented to contain the spread of the virus, energy consumption in each of these sectors was forecast to decrease by 16 percent in the year, when compared to 2019, and by 19 percent in comparison to a pre-COVID-19 scenario. Meanwhile, residential energy consumption was projected to reach nearly 12.9 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in 2020, up from 12.2 Mtoe a year earlier.
