At the beginning of 2020, before the COVID-19 outbreak, energy consumption in Mexico was forecast to amount to 140.5 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in the year, up from 138 Mtoe a year earlier. As a consequence of the outbreak, and lockdown measures implemented to control the spread of the virus, the forecast energy consumption was revised, being expected to reach 128.6 Mtoe - a decrease of 8.5 percent in comparison to the previously projected figure. The commercial and services sector was expected to experience the highest relative drop, when compared to a pre-COVID-19 scenario.
