In the past ten years from 2008 to 2018, the level of arithmetic skills in India’s rural private schools have not seen any significant improvement. In 2018, the share of grade five students who could divide a three number by a single digit was about 40 percent. This was roughly a two percent improvement from 2016. Compared to 2008, the share has declined by about seven percent.

Learning assessments by ASER were carried out at home for children from 5 to 16 years of age.
Sampling - In each district, 30 villages were sampled, and from each village, 20 households were randomly sampled. In total, 600 households in each rural district were sampled or 3,00,000 households at a national level.
