In the fourth quarter of 2019, most people employed in the urban areas in Morocco were self-employed which represented 67.2 percent of the employed labor force in the urban communities (7.3 million people). This was more than twice the number of employees in these areas. Overall, urban employment in Morocco is higher than what is found in rural areas.

Employees are persons of working age who are engaged in any activity with the aim of producing goods or providing services for pay or profit. Self-employed workers, on the other hand, refer to workers who work on their own account with one or a few partners or in cooperative, and whose job remuneration directly comes from profits that are derived from the goods and services that are produced.
