In 2019, the S&P 500 index increased in value by 31.5 percent, but was outperformed by Nasdaq which grew by 35.2 percent. However, gold was the only asset to increase in value in 2020, which is likely due to the fact that investors tend to focus on gold in times of economic uncertainty or economic crisis. The losses experienced by the other assets can be explained by the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on financial markets globally.
