Following a series of high profile instances of police brutality and racial inequality in the United States in 2020, several professional athletes and teams took a stand and refused to compete in scheduled games to bring awareness to the situation. During an August 2020 survey in the United States, 25 percent of respondents said that this protest was very effective in bringing attention to police brutality and racial inequality.
