In the second quarter of 2023, the banking profitability index in China had a value of 62 percent. It indicated that 62 percent of the heads of Chinese banking institutions assessed that the profitability of the banking industry was in a good or expanding state. The index value dropped in the first quarter of 2020 when COVID-19 broke out in the country.
Chinese banking profitability index from 2nd quarter 2018 to 2nd quarter 2023
A diffusion index indicates the climate of the banking industry estimated by heads of banking institutions in the observed quarter. The index is derived by calculating the proportions of respondents whose "profitability improved", "profitability remained the same", and "profitability deteriorated", assigning weights 1, 0.5, and 0 to them respectively. Finally, the average value is calculated and converted to percentage. Interpretation: Percentage of indicators that expect increasing profitability.
