As of 2017, the urban areas of Djibouti had the highest proportion of population with access to basic sanitation facilities in East Africa, 76 percent. In contrast, Ethiopia had the worst situation, as only 20 percent of urban residents had improved sanitation facilities. That is, eight out of ten people in the country shared a toilet with other households. Sanitation plays a key role in the fight against diseases, such as the coronavirus (COVID-19). For instance, as of November 2020, Ethiopia was the most affected country by coronavirus in East Africa.
