In a 2020 study, Airbus was found to have 1,676 publicly disclosed tier-1 suppliers. High number of tier-1 suppliers expose a company to higher opaque risks with potential failures in the delivery network. The same study revealed that Airbus has over 12,000 tier-2 suppliers.

A tier-1 supplier delivers most important components of a production process. Global value chains utilize multitude of suppliers in multiple tiers.
