In 2022, the Indonesian Social Security Administrator for Health, or BPJS Kesehatan, recorded about 248 million beneficiaries of the Indonesian national health insurance-Indonesian health card (JKN-KIS). JKN-KIS is a program initiated by the Indonesian government to ensure that every Indonesian citizen gets financial assurance whenever they need health care services.
Universal health coverage is still underway
Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, has witnessed significant progress in its healthcare through the JKN-KIS program, which was first launched in early 2014. Health awareness is increasing as healthcare is getting more affordable for its citizens, especially vulnerable groups and those with low income. In 2022, beneficiaries primarily used JKN-KIS to visit public health centers, private doctors, and primary clinics. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that almost 90 percent of JKN-KIS beneficiaries claimed to be satisfied with the services provided. However, to date, the JKN-KIS program is still in the process of reaching its target of covering 100 percent of Indonesia’s population.
Challenges faced by the JKN scheme
Despite all the positive developments brought about by the JKN-KIS scheme, it still faces many challenges. Member contributions to the insurance scheme are still far below the government’s target as the number of non-paying JKN members far exceeds the paying ones. In addition, many Indonesians living in rural areas and the eastern part of Indonesia are still unable to benefit from the program due to inadequate health facilities and infrastructure. The lack of trained healthcare providers at the national level has also hampered efforts to reduce disparities in healthcare access.
