* The source uses New York City as the base for the calculation, which means that for New York City, each index should be 100(%). The difference between New York City's score and each listed city's indicates the difference in percentage between prices of both cities. For example, the cost of living in Mexico City according to this ranking is 56.9 percent lower than the cost of living in New York City, since the Mexican capital has an index score of 43.1. 
The source defines the cost of living index as "a relative indicator of consumer goods prices, including groceries, restaurants, transportation, and utilities. The cost of living index doesn't include accommodation expenses such as rent or mortgage."
