The use of lignite for energy production in Greece more than halved between 2012 and 2019, decreasing by some 19 terawatt hours. In 2019, the country's lignite energy production amounted to 10.38 terawatt hours.
Lignite's fall is directly related to the EU Renewable energy directive. As of June 2020, the main source of energy generation in Greece was natural gas, followed by renewable sources. Lignite accounted for 13.9 percent of the total energy generation in the first six months of 2020.
