In Summer 2019, the UK government announced it would strive towards becoming carbon neutral by 2050. A hydrogen and carbon capture and storage-led decarbonization would require capital investments of 160 billion British pounds until the mid century and see hydrogen demand climb to 735 terawatt hours per year. This would result in the capture of 197 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
