According to a survey conducted by GEM Partners in Japan in December 2020, a significant majority of respondents did not consider overseas travel to be possible in the near future amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Around 74 percent stated that people should refrain from undertaking overseas travel for more than six months. Following the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency in April. While it was lifted again in May, citizens were advised to remain at home and refrain from going outside.
