In 2018, about one fifth of Ghanaian children under 18 years old were reported to have a functioning difficulty. The highest percentages of children with functioning difficulties were found in the Volta, Eastern and Upper West regions, while the lowest percentages were reported from the Northern and Greater Accra regions.

The source adds that "Children with disabilities are often likely to be among the poorest members of the population and are less likely to attend school, access medical services, or have their voices heard in society." Functional difficulties referred to difficulties with "seeing, hearing, walking, fine motor skills, communication, learning, playing, controlling, behaviour, self care, remembering, concentrating, accepting, change, making friends, anxiety and depression."
