During the COVID-19 pandemic, many households were forced to work from home (WFH) due to population confinements. This resulted in a reduction in traffic, and energy demand but also emissions. Projections show that if the trend for working from home continues post-pandemic, and everybody able to work from home worldwide did so for one day a week, then global emissions could fall by 24 million MtCO2 a year.
Single households in the United States with a car commute working from home one day a week could see reductions of six kilograms of CO2 a day during the summer months. On average, per capita CO2 emissions in the United States amount to approximately 14.61 metric tons a year.

This includes employees who telework, as well as a wide range of occupations including industrial outworkers, artisans, self-employed business owners, and freelancers. Among employees, about 3% were working exclusively or mainly from their home before the Covid-19 pandemic.
