According to a survey conducted in December 2019 in Japan, the majority of smokers felt troubled, if they would not be able to smoke in public facilities and foodservice establishments due to the amended Health Promotion Act regarding passive smoking regulations. The survey revealed that respondents would be most troubled by smoking bans in izakayas, with around 77.4 percent.
The amendment of the Health Promotion Act in Japan started in July 2018 and was scheduled to be completed by April 2020 prior to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The bill prohibits smoking in public facilities, offices as well as most restaurants and public areas.
