In 2022, total fair trade product sales in France amounted to 2.08 billion euros. In the past 15 years, the French fair trade market has experienced a rapid growth. It can be explained by the fact that consumers are increasingly mindful of the sustainability of their purchases. In fact, a growing number of French people are willing to spend more on food if the farmer receives a fair income.

Labels for sustainable and equitable trade relationships

Fair trade is a trading model that aims to ensure fair working conditions for producers, especially those in developing countries. It focuses mainly on equitable incomes and better social and environmental standards. There are several distinct fair trade certifications available for French products. Some examples are Fairtrade/Max Havelaar, Producteurs Paysans or Fair for life. France is one of the top 5 countries that sells the most products certified by Fairtrade International.

A broader definition in France

Since 2014, the definition of fair trade has been expanded to domestic production in France. These new products also contributed to the promising results of the fair trade market in the country. Certifications that are exclusively reserved for French production have since been created. Overall, production-wise, baked goods and pastry products make up close to half of fair trade food items manufactured in the country.
