At the start of the 2020, emissions from the oil industry in China amounted to 152.21 million metric tons of CO2, compared with 146.58 million in the same month the previous year. However, as the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) took their toll on the energy industry, emissions dropped. With much of China placed under strict lockdowns to stop the spread, energy demand fell. By March, emissions from oil had fallen to 123.26 million metric tons, but by the next month they had returned to pre-COVID levels. In comparison, emissions form the burning of coal surged past pre-COVID levels in May.
