On a global level, India boasted the largest share of passenger rail movement of just under 40 percent in 2019, followed by China and Japan at 27 percent and 11 percent, respectively. With the lowest percentage of passenger train movement out of the three other regions, the European Union, at nine percent, was the only non-Asian region among the world’s dominant regions in terms of passenger rail movement.

Combined, these regions constitute around 90 percent of overall global passenger movement on conventional rail. Medium- to long-distance journeys during which maximum speed limits do not surpass 250 kilometers per hour are classed as conventional rail journeys.
