In 2018, about 71 percent of children aged seven to 12 years in Nigerian urban areas were attending elementary school. On the other hand, the share was by nearly 20 percent lower in rural Nigeria. In addition, in both rural and urban areas the net school attendance ratio was slightly lower among females.

"The net attendance ratio (NAR) for primary school is the percentage of the primary school-age (7-12 years) population that is attending primary school. The NAR for secondary school is the percentage of the secondary school-age (13-18 years) population that is attending secondary school. By definition, the NAR cannot exceed 100%."
