As of 2019, sales within South African supermarkets accounted for 74.8 percent of total sales from Shoprite Holdings. The contribution from supermarkets outside of South Africa was at 14.2 percent. The Shoprite Group opened its first warehouse in 1979 and has since expanded to become one of the most successful retailers on the African continent and the Indian Ocean Islands.
