From April 5 to 14, 2020, nitrogen dioxide air pollution levels in Lima, Peru decreased by 72 percent when compared to the first ten days of March, the highest reduction reported in the monitoring period. In the following weeks, the city's pollution level increased weekly, reaching an equivalent decrease of 47 percent between April 26 and May 5, when compared to the baseline.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is a gaseous air pollutant and has a direct connection to fossil fuel emissions. Changes in air pollution levels are related to a reduction in industrial activity and traffic circulation in urban areas, a consequence of lockdown measures enforced globally in an attempt to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The first case of COVID-19 was reported in Peru on March 6. Since then, the country has reported the second largest number of cases in Latin America. Total lockdown was implemented on March 16.
