As a result of the Supreme Court's decision that struck down the federal ban on sports betting in 2018, various states in the U.S. have legalized, or introduced legislation to legalize, sports betting. In 2019, public perception on the regulation of the betting industry was divided. According to the source, when surveyed, 66 percent of respondents believed that sports betting was best regulated by state and tribal governments. In contrast, 17 percent of respondents were in favor of the federal government regulating sports betting.
