Medal count by country in the Women's 4x400m relay at the Summer Olympics 1972-2020

The Women's 4x400 meter Relay has been included in all Olympic Summer Games since it was first introduced in 1972. While East German or Soviet teams won five of the first six events (both countries boycotted the 1984 Games), U.S. teams have won every event since 1996; making them the most successful team in this event. Allyson Felix has been the most successful athlete in this event, winning four consecutive golds between the 2008 and 2020 Games.

Stripped medals

2000 gold medal winner, Marion Jones, was stripped of her medal in 2007 (along with four other medals), due to her involvement in the BALCO doping scandal, and one of the qualifying runners from 2004, Crystal Cox, was also stripped of her gold medal in 2012 after admitting to doping; in both cases the other teammates were allowed to retain their medals. Russian relay teams won the silver medals in both 2008 and 2012, however retests in 2016 and 2017 respectively disqualified both teams; in both cases, all medals were redistributed accordingly (Belarus, who finished in fourth in 2008, were also disqualified for doping and the bronze medal instead went to Britain). As of May 2020, of the six Russian athletes who ran across the 2008 and 2012 finals, four have tested positive for doping, while another runner is currently under investigation.
