The Men's 400 meter sprint has been included in all Olympic Games since 1896, and athletes from the United States have seen the most success in the event, winning a total of 19 golds and 43 total medals (over half of all medals ever won in the event). U.S. athletes have swept the podium on five occasions, and there were only five occasions where a US runner did not win a medal at all; these include themost recent Games in 2020, the 1980 Moscow Games, which the U.S. boycotted, and the 1908 London Games, where U.S. athletes boycotted the final as a protest against what they perceived as biased British officiating (producing the only walkover victory in Olympic athletic history). The U.S.' Michael Johnson is the most successful athlete in this event, winning two gold medals in 1996 and 2000, while Grenada's Kirani James has won one medal of each color. No athlete has ever been stripped of a medal won in this event.

This data was collected using the official Olympic.org site, as well as a spreadsheet from the Guardian that includes data from 1896-2008 (available here), 2012 and 2016 data was compared with that from Encyclopaedia Britannica, and several news outlets were used to update the table when medals were reassigned (i.e. for doping offenses).
