A study on K-pop consumption in the United States revealed that 53.1 percent of respondents listened to K-pop for seven hours or more per week, and almost 35 percent listened to the genre for between three and seven hours on a weekly basis. K-pop has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, partially thanks to the 2012 release of 'Gangnam Style' by Psy. The music video for the song was the first YouTube video ever to hit one billion views, and won 'Best Video' at the MTV Europe Music Awards in the year of its release.
