In 2019, Île-de-France and Nouvelle-Aquitaine were the regions with the highest number of newly diagnosed HIV infections among men in France, with 1,210 and 199 cases, respectively. If not treated, Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS): a condition that damages the immune system, making it unable to defeat diseases.
HIV in France
In France, the number of new HIV cases has been relatively stable over time. The highest number of cases was registered in 2014, when 5,691 people were newly diagnosed with HIV. During the following years, the number decreased gradually until 2019. During that year, only 4,923 new cases were diagnosed, thus making it the year with the least infections in a decade. HIV is more common among men than women, and the most affected age group is the one consisting of people who are 35 to 54 years old. In total, more than 130,000 HIV/AIDS patients were taken charge of by French social security in 2017.

The number of people diagnosed with AIDS, the condition that results from HIV-infection, has been decreasing over the last decade. Whereas nearly one thousand new diagnoses were registered in 2010, this number had dropped to 430 in 2019.
