The total value of alternative finance transactions across Europe in 2020 came to over 22 billion euros. The United Kingdom was by far the largest alternative finance market in Europe, accounting for almost 60 percent of all transactions in 2020. In 2020, per capita funding of alternative online finance transactions were also highest in the UK, followed by Latvia and Estonia.
Alternative finance includes the funding of individuals, businesses and other entities outside of the traditional capital markets and banking systems. These include but are not limited to peer-to-peer lending, balance sheet lending, invoice trading, debt based securities and mini bonds as well as investment and non-investment based crowdfunding. The vast majority of alternative finance value in Europe was via debt finance with 86 percent.
