As at March 1, 2020, 56 percent of higher education students from China were located outside of Australia. With the exception of vocational education and training, at least a quarter of all other student visa subclass holders from China were not in the country, despite the Australian school year having started in the previous month of February. The coronavirus pandemic and a subsequent travel ban on Chinese nationals to Australia was largely responsible for thousands of students being unable to enter Australia to begin the 2020 school year.
